People Around You Can Shape What Happens to You: Avoid the Negative Affirmations of Others

Loading ... Loading ...Read Summary

Although there is a great deal of historical debate about the specifics, legend has it Hermes Trismegistus–one of the most important sorcerers of ancient Greece– had a tablet in his tomb with the greatest secret in all of history written on it. When the tomb was opened centuries later, it was said people waited with a sense of wonder for the wisdom of the tablet to be revealed. The secret written on the tablet was:

As within, so without;
As above, so below.

This statement has been made in one form or another by others, such as Buddha, Isaiah, Jesus, and Moses. Countless books and studies have been devoted to the meaning of this statement. If you take the time to understand it, I believe it will be among the most important you ever read. As I see it, this is the significance of this statement:

Whatever we believe inside of us becomes expressed in the world around us. Your belief about what is true is reflected by the world around you, its conditions, events, and circumstances. Simply put, if you believe you are successful, the world around you will manifest in that way. You will find yourself surrounded by the accoutrements of what success means to you, whether they include a certain type of car, home, mate, or even a jet. If you believe you are a failure, the world around you will manifest that as well. This will show in the form of recurring failures, whether in the form of financial losses, divorce, substance abuse, or poverty.

Whatever exists in your mind is also what will exist in your environment, circumstances, and physical surroundings. Your mind creates its own environment.

As humans, we have the ability to imagine things that do not exist and to create the world around us the way we want. We have the ability to attract the people and experiences we want. Similarly, we have the ability to repel circumstances we don’t want. No other animal in the world has this ability. It is an ability you, too, can use.

In respect to how we influence ourselves, it is important to understand the people around us also have the ability to influence us in a way that has a great impact on who we become.

I am about to share some extremely important advice I believe could permanently alter the course of your life and that you can use to change the lives of others. The best teachers and coaches practice this idea with their students and many times it separates the successful from the unsuccessful.

Understand your role in shaping your world, the people in it, and the occurrences related to it.Strongly believe what you wish your world to become.Build the power to make your imagination attract the forces that shape your environment the way you want it to be.Placing immense faith in what your heart believes, makes a phenomenal difference in your life and career.

I at one time was a reporter for my college newspaper, the Chicago Maroon. I was assigned a story about a high school senior who’d recently won the most prestigious science prize for high school seniors in the country, the Westinghouse Science Prize. The student’s teacher taught at a private high school on the University of Chicago campus. As I interviewed the teacher, I discovered several of his students had won this prize. In fact, despite the fact that only one of these prizes was given out nationally each year, three or four of his students had won over the past several years. After speaking with the teacher at length, I realized this was no coincidence. I believe the students’ success had a lot to do with the suggestions he gave them about what they could achieve. I remember probing specifically about why so many of this man’s students had won the award. Essentially, he said the following:

“Every few years, I have an exceptional student, and I start telling him over and over he is going to win the award. When I do this, most times the student ends up winning.”

I had a teacher like this in high school as well. After we had discussed colleges, and after I had decided where I thought I would like to go, he told me, “Then that is where you will go.” Incredibly, out of all the schools I applied to, this is where I ended up going.

Great teachers, great parents, and great coaches make people believe in themselves. They also make them take on the characteristics of what they want to achieve before they even achieve it. How is this relevant to your job search?

When I was recruiting, I had an uncanny ability to place people at the firms I believed were their best fits. Keep in mind I was not the one getting my candidates jobs; they were. When each person began his or her job search, I would say something like, “I am confident you are going to get a job at this particular firm.” I would keep repeating this over and over again. Despite the fact that (1) the firm might have been out of the candidate’s league in terms of their qualifications, (2) the person might have been looking at 20-plus law firms, and (3) I might never have had a candidate interview at that particular firm before, when I did this, my candidates often got jobs at these “target firms.” What was happening here? Why was this occurring?

When people start believing they are capable of achieving something, they begin to take on the form of what they believe.

When someone believes they are going to get a job with a certain employer, and really feels it deep down, things start to fall into place. I am not sure why this is. Nevertheless, I have seen it over and over again in my work as a recruiter.

Another thing I have learned as a recruiter is the importance of sharing positive news with people, not bad news. Building up job seekers and not sharing negative information about rejections works wonders. In fact, it is largely this skill that separates good recruiters from average ones. When I work with someone, I make sure to share inspirational and motivational information because I know negative energy and information will bring the person down. This is a basic yet essential skill I learned long ago, and it works.

Remember: You control your own mind. You control what you allow in and what happens within your own mind. If you let negative information in, there is a good chance the world around you will also become negative. If you choose to let positive information in, there is a good chance your world will become positive.
Your job situation, financial condition, health, social status, and friends are all a reflection of how you feel about yourself. This is the real meaning of what is “within” and what is “without” in your life. This is why it is extremely important you control your thinking in your life.

As a recruiter I have dealt with individuals who were fired from their previous jobs. People who are fired are often difficult to work with because future employers view them suspiciously. Basically, most employers feel these candidates are likely to cause problems in their next job. While it does not always come up in interviews, if someone is not currently working, a future employer is likely to wonder why.

I always tell my candidates to write down and memorize words like the following: “I was not fired from my job. I was a huge asset to my last firm. I am going to do even better in my next job than I did in my last. My last employer loved me!” Writing down and memorizing words like these can be a real asset. In fact, when people write things like this down, the subject of their having been fired almost never comes up in interviews.

This brings me to a very important point about your job search and your current job. In every company’s social network there are people who send out negative information about you, your employer, and others. Parents, friends, and others do this to us all the time, intentionally or not. When this happens, you need to understand this will influence you in a certain way. Choose not to believe this negative information. Avoid it. It can do severe damage to you and your future.

If someone tells you you’re not capable of getting a certain type of job or doing a certain thing you want to do, tell him he is wrong. I am often forced to cut off contact with people who do this to me. People who do this to you do not have your best interest at heart. Usually they are trying to maintain some sort of control over you or the relationship they have with you.

Protect your mind and fill it with positive thoughts about yourself. In order to reach your full potential, there is really no other way.

You Need to Be in Favor with the Right People

Loading ... Loading ...Read Summary

When I started my first company, back in 2000, I and the other people who were with me at the time sat down and had a three-day meeting during which we discussed what we wanted the company to be then and what we wanted it to become. It was an incredible meeting that I will remember forever. During those three days, we came up with this fundamental core value, which has since shaped the course of my life and my various companies: We Must Get People Jobs. This has driven all of our work since that time, and anytime we have seen limitations in any certain way of doing things, we have always come back to this core value and expanded upon it. Today, because of this core value, we have evolved into numerous businesses that are connected to this same ideology.

Back in 2001, I started a company called Legal Authority to help law students and attorneys get jobs. I had been a law professor, and I noticed that many people were having an extraordinarily difficult time getting jobs after graduating. The main reason they were having a difficult time was that they were “undermarketing” themselves. Most law schools at the time, including the one where I taught, had only a small list of law firms, public interest organizations, government offices, companies, and so forth that they made available to their students to apply to.

To my mind, this did not make any sense. In a city such as Los Angeles, for instance, there are more than 10,000 employers that hire attorneys. Conversely, the average law school might keep a list of only 200 employers for their students to apply to. Because everyone was applying to the same employers, it was more difficult to get jobs. Getting on the law schools’ list often was a political game whereby the law schools would steer their very best students to certain employers and not others. I figured that by creating giant lists of employers that students could apply to, I would make it much easier for them to find jobs.

As part of the service, I would put together a comprehensive list of prospective employers, rewrite their résumés and cover letters, and print all the materials that would be mailed out to employers. In some cases, people might mail out more than 500 letters; they would always be marketing themselves to a much wider variety of employers than their law schools would be providing them with. More important, they would be marketing themselves to employers that other law students were not marketing themselves to (i.e., employers not on the law school’s preferred list of employers), and since they were often the only person seeking a job at a given employer from a given law school, they would really stand out.

Just as I had anticipated, the process worked like magic. The law students we assisted ended up getting jobs–time and time again. I then opened the service to attorneys, and soon people who had been unemployed for weeks or months started getting job offers. The service grew like crazy, and within a few months, I had a crew of at least 20 people researching employers, several people writing resumes, and people printing résumés and cover letters. The operation became so big, I needed to move offices. In a short time we had become overwhelmed with job seekers using our services. It was a very funny and exciting time in the business.

Because the service did more than the law school career services offices, and was so much more effective, I started running full-page advertisements in law student magazines that said things like: “LEGAL AUTHORITY CAN BE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN YOUR LAW SCHOOL CAREER SERVICES OFFICE!” I ran these advertisements not because I had a problem with law school career services offices, but because what I was saying was simply true. The company really did do more for law students than a career services office–in fact, in terms of marketing, it did a lot more.

The service also took off when we started dealing with attorneys, because the process worked just as well for them as it had for law students. In the job search realm, there are many legal recruiters out there who track down and place attorneys in law firms and other organizations. However, legal recruiters typically only work with the largest and most prestigious law firms–perhaps the top 2%-3% from all firms. The reason for this is that recruiters usually charge a fee to the employer, which is 25% over and above the attorney’s annual salary. Only the best attorneys can work with recruiters, since law firms are only willing to pay these fees for the most extraordinary attorneys. The problem therefore is that attorneys are only able to get jobs through recruiters if they are amongst the elite of the elite; this leaves the rest of the attorneys to figure out how to get jobs on their own.

The attorneys who used Legal Authority found incredible fortune using our service. They were able to secure jobs after being unemployed, and in most cases, Legal Authority proved to be a far more effective way for them to get jobs than by using a recruiting firm. Recruiters would never openly admit this to an attorney because it would reveal their weakness–but it was true in almost every case. The reasons for this were (1) the attorney would be able to cover the entire market, and (2) there was no fee attached to their candidacy. Law firms are happy to pay fees to recruiters for the most exceptional attorneys (and, indeed, almost expect them to be using recruiter), but 95% of the attorneys out there would actually be ignored or overlooked by a firm, even if they did come by way of a recruiter.

To publicize this fact, I started running advertisements for Legal Authority in all sorts of magazines and other publications, explaining how it was more effective  than using a recruiter. With these advertisements, the business continued to grow. Within a year of starting the company,  the company had more than 50 employees. We have since started another company called EmploymentAuthority.com, which does the same thing for people who are in other professions outside of law.

Around the same time, I was making a name for myself as a legal recruiter. I started getting invitations to speak to the student bodies of various law schools about the job market. I was not known by law schools or anyone for my involvement with Legal Authority, but I was known as a recruiter. When I would go into the law schools, I would be introduced and would start talking about the legal job market and then segue into a talk about Legal Authority and how it was an incredibly effective way for law students to get jobs. I remember after one speech, the Career Services Dean of one law school walked up to me and said something I could not believe:

“If I had known you were behind Legal Authority, I would not have invited you to speak.”

I was puzzled by this statement, and the woman seemed very angry. I lingered at the cocktail reception afterward and then asked someone else in the career services office why the Dean disliked Legal Authority so much. She told me that my magazine ads had offended all of the career services people because the advertisements had attacked the effectiveness of career services offices. The more I tried to reach out to career services offices, the more hostile they became.

Within a year or so of this particular incident, I started getting letters and phone calls from the National Association of Legal Search Consultants (NALSC). They threatened to revoke the membership of a separate recruiting company I worked for if I did not remove from the Legal Authority website information about how Legal Authority worked as compared to recruiters. At their demands and due to their threats, we removed articles and other materials from Legal Authority, all of which explained in one way or another that recruiters could only place the best attorneys and only could place them at the select few law firms that were willing to pay 25% in fees to the recruiting firm.

My relationship with this particular group became one of never-ending troubles and aggravation, as they looked into our various companies and started objecting to one thing after another (even in businesses not involving recruiting). Their objections to Legal Authority and our other job search businesses in the legal community grew so pronounced that we eventually told the organization we wanted nothing more to do with them. Our core value of getting attorneys jobs was in direct conflict with what appeared to be their core value of protecting the legal recruiting industry from businesses that might be viewed as competitive. Apparently, several years ago one of the Founders of NALSC was kicked out of the organization for starting a job site for attorneys. Associations exist to protect the members’ interests, although in my opinion there is nothing wrong with two sides having opposing views. I have no animosity toward the organization, nor any regrets about the success of Legal Authority.

As Legal Authority continued to grow, our core value of getting attorneys jobs expanded into other businesses. The second business we started was a job site, LawCrossing.com. The way most job sites work is that they charge employers a fee, typically $350 to $500 to put a job on their websites. While this is a good business model, this also unfortunately ends up keeping lots of jobs off of the site, because not all employers are willing to pay these fees. My idea was to gather employment listings from every job site, plus the legal jobs that were available on LawCrossing.com. Also, many employers list jobs directly on their own websites. I decided that it would also be a good idea to collect the job listings from these websites and put them on LawCrossing.com as well. We launched this business and it quickly became very popular. It was based on the core value of getting people jobs. We have always looked at how people get jobs, and if there are ever deficiencies in the system, the goal has been to correct these deficiencies.

As LawCrossing’s position in the market strengthened, I was enthusiastic and wanted to reach out to law schools and tell them about it. I figured that they would be incredibly happy that such a site existed, and I wanted to give the service to law students and others for free. Several years ago, I decided that a good thing to do would be to send one of our employees on a cross-country trip to visit every US law school. I purchased a giant Dodge Sprinter van and had all sorts of graphics put on the side of it promoting the business, LawCrossing. We had a sign on the back of the van that said “WE LOVE ATTORNEYS AND LAW STUDENTS.” I was incredibly excited about the business and loved our customers.

I hired an old Mormon man in his late 60s, from rural Utah, to travel across the country in the van. He was enthusiastic about making the trip in numerous respects, and he seemed to be the perfect person for the job. However, within a few weeks of his hitting the road, when he reached states like Kentucky and others, we started to get crazy e-mails and messages from various law schools. They sent us messages stating that it was “sick” to have a man traveling across the United States in a van promoting sex with law students. I realized this is hard to believe; however, to my astonishment, many of the law schools decided to interpret the message on the truck in a negative way, rather than a positive way. The furor among the law schools about the so-called “love truck” got so out of hand that I had to pull the entire tour. Everything the tour represented had been grossly misinterpreted by the law schools. I can assure you that no “funny business” was going on in this van.

In thinking about these episodes with Legal Authority and LawCrossing, with the career services offices and with the recruiting association, a consistent theme comes to mind for me: Influencers and Opinion Leaders were not consulted and assuaged in the process of launching these businesses. Instead, both of my businesses pronounced deficiencies in the system and made those in charge of the deficiencies a marketing target. Law school career services offices were targeted because they only gave students access to a limited number of employers. Recruiters were targeted because they could only give people access to a limited number of employers. In both cases, the other parties were guilty of intentionally controlling access to information. However, for both of these groups, information was the source of their power. My targeting this power was a major threat.

In reflecting on this situation, I can definitely say that I made some big mistakes with the recruiting association and the career services offices. Despite their deficiencies, targeting them was a fundamental mistake because the public’s reaction to a business, or person, is generally shaped by opinion leaders–people who influence the opinions of the public. Recruiters influence the opinions of attorneys because they are talking to attorneys every day. Career services deans in law schools influence the opinions of law students because they are talking to law students every day. Targeting these people of leadership and authority in my marketing campaign was a massive mistake. In every business and endeavor, one of the most important things you can do is get on the good side of the people who influence others’ opinions.

Politicians typically come to power because they have gained the influence of those who influence the opinions of others. For example, presidents typically are sponsored by important influencers in business. It is no secret that Hollywood stars, for example, use their power to influence elections. Several years ago, I was in the student loan business and one day someone in power in a major bank asked me to give a decent sum of money to a United States congressman. I did it. I proceeded to have lunch with the congressman a short time later, and from then on I regularly received calls from his office asking if I needed any help on Capitol Hill with various things. I was very surprised by this, but this is how politics works. Politicians seek the favor of people willing to support them and then find themselves committed to those special interests.

One reason that politicians lose power when they are in office is their inability to gain the favor of other leaders who have the power to influence others. Watching politics is fascinating because what you generally see are politicians making crazy decisions and pushing through insane legislation; it is more due to appeasing special interests and others in power than the general populace they purport to represent. The best businesspeople, the best politicians, and the best leaders in any profession who gain and hold on to power know that they have to influence people who are in a position to control the opinions of others.

Something that really interested me was the resignation of Sarah Palin as the governor of Alaska. Here was a person who was extremely popular, at one point becoming a vice presidential candidate–and then several months later she resigns from her position, possibly dooming her political career forever. Most of the news stories I have watched and read have indicated that she may have resigned because the criticism against her became too much for her to personally handle. As she got into the public spotlight, she began to face enormous criticism for everything from how she dressed, to how her children behaved, and more. The criticism she faced became almost unrelenting. The opinion leaders and people in power attacked Palin and were able to make their opinions predominant. Without the support of the public, it became impossible for her to continue to govern.

People who control others’ opinions are everywhere. For example, they exist in families. There are people inside families who have the ability to influence everyone else’s opinions. This person could be a small child who turns against a parent, planting the seeds that empower the mother to leave the father, and causing other relatives to turn on the family. Similarly, people with strong and influential opinions exist within companies and organizations, and they are not always the people with the most money, or the best title.

What does all of this mean for your life and career? Unfortunately, it means that it is important to cater to and get the approval of people who have the ability to influence the opinions of others one way or another. These people are everywhere. Politicians rely upon them. Astute businesspeople rely upon them. Social climbers rely upon them. These people have an ability to control what happens in your career.

In my case, I have made mistakes by not catering more closely to people with the power to influence others. When you go against influential people, they can turn against you and make your career and life much more difficult. Often the person who gets fired, fails to get a promotion, and fails to ever get ahead is guilty of not impressing–or even offending–the people who have the ability to influence others. Believe it or not, this can be even more detrimental than doing poor work.

All around you there are countless political games at play, as people attempt to influence others with power and control others’ opinions. In Hollywood, for example, I have heard some incredible stories that are demonstrative of this: I know of male movie stars whom the public thinks are heterosexual, who slept their way to the top–by having sex with much older men who are producers or another position of power. There seems to be no limit to the lengths people have gone in order to get to the top in their profession–but this is all around us and it is part of the game. You do not need to sleep with people to get to the top, but you do need to be aware of the game going on and you do need to play it, or at least play along with it to get ahead. My career advice is that you need to do your best to be in favor with the right people.

Where all successful people have started and what you can learn from the

You have the desire to succeed in life? If you are reading this, then the answer is probably yes. Because you want to be successful, I am sure you have asked yourself how other successful people was that way. And, if you're like most people, you probably have analyzed to the point where you no longer remember why you analyze them more.

Of course, it's great to learn from other people who have become successful because they have the wisdom, experience and knowledge that you need to become successful as well. The great thing about looking back at these successful people is to know that when they started, they were just like you.

I think Ralph Waldo Emerson did an excellent job explaining this when he said, "every artist was first an amateur. You see, you must start somewhere, just like any other successful person. They were all amateurs at some point in their lives. The reason is that they were successful because she gained the experience and expertise of a professional.

Two things contribute to your relocation of an amateur, or a lesser place than where you want to be, to be successful. The first is consistency, and the second is time. Amateurs work consistently on their skill and then over time it develops to a point where people start to see the experience and the perfection of their skill.

If you are successful, no matter what it is or where you want to be alive, remain consistent and keep with it. These two keys will help you to go from an amateur to ever someone that is well respected in your area.

Give People What They Want

Loading ... Loading ...  Watch Related Video   |  Read Summary

Lately I have been hearing more and more people say that there are no jobs. I hear this so much it is beginning to make me a bit angry. There may not be the same number of jobs that there were two years ago; however, there are still jobs. There are actually tons of jobs, all over the place. But here is a little reality check:

If you want to make $70,000 a year assembling steering assemblies in an auto plant, there are not as many of these jobs anymore. If you want to work for a newspaper that is losing money, there are not as many of these jobs anymore either. If you want to get overtime every week on your job, there are not as many jobs that are paying overtime anymore, since companies are cutting back and watching their money more carefully. If you want to make $80,000 as a salesperson in a furniture store, there are not as many of these jobs as there were a few years ago.If you are a union electrician who used to get paid $60 an hour to install wiring in Las Vegas high rises–there are not as many of these jobs as there were a few years ago.If you are typically paid $250,000 a year as a copywriter in an advertising agency, there are not as many jobs as there were a few years ago.If you are a corporate attorney who used to make $275,000 a year, whose job is to help big companies sell securities, there are not as many of these jobs around. And if you are a finance wiz who used to be paid $500,000 a year to do incredibly creative things with numbers–there are not as many of these jobs around either.

The viability of certain types of jobs out there has diminished because the demand for the work quite simply has gone away or decreased dramatically. There is no doubt about it: there are fewer of these sorts of jobs available–but still there are jobs. This process will continue into the foreseeable future. There used to be a lot of jobs for people making horse buggies, and these jobs do not exist anymore–but this does not mean that every job has gone away. The issue is that people no longer need or want horse buggies.

In order to reach our full potential in everything that we do, we need to give people what they want. If we are not providing what people want, then we will not have jobs. It is as simple as that.

But there are always jobs, more than you might believe.

When I watch the news, read the paper, and so forth I am amazed when I see newscasts that show people spending their days sitting in diners, smoking cigarettes, looking at the classified ads and declaring, “There are no jobs!” It is incredible to me that so many people are brainwashing themselves into believing this. If you watch the news for a day or two, you will always see news crews interviewing various people who declare that there are no jobs anywhere.

I have seen at least ten news stories on television in the last month or so where carpenters, electricians, and all sorts of people who have lost their jobs with the housing bust in Las Vegas, Florida, and elsewhere have made this declaration.

When you read the paper, you see the same thing. It could be a giant protest occurring in France or Germany, where people are declaring, “There are no jobs!” All over the world people seem to be declaring, “There are no jobs! There’s nothing to be done! There’s no work to be found! The world is awful!”

What people should be saying is “There are not the same jobs!” Because there are always jobs out there. Always. Jobs do not go away. Jobs change, people become interested in different things, the world changes direction–but there is always work to be done.

Even in the most inhospitable and economically ravaged areas, you will find people employed. Find the worst neighborhood in America and you will see countless people employed. You will always see people employed.

If there are children, there is a school somewhere nearby, for which teachers, janitors, bus drivers, and other will be working. If you call the police, ambulance, or fire department, they will appear wherever you are–police, ambulance drivers, and firefighters are always working. There will always be people working in the jails and in law enforcement, taking care of the criminals. There will be people working in the hospital, taking care of the sick. There will always be people working in the Department of Motor Vehicles, and in the unemployment offices, and other various state offices. If a neighborhood is in really bad shape, you might see real estate signs up. Real estate agents are working, and so are carpenters, if they are boarding up the houses. There is usually a market nearby that sells food, liquor, cigarettes, and so forth. People are working in the market.People need clothes and other essentials, and all sorts of stores are around to fill these needs. The stores must be staffed adequately. The garbage will always be picked up at houses and stores. Garbage men and so forth will always be working.

These jobs never go away. They may not be the sorts of jobs that everyone wants to do, but they are there. They exist because people require certain things, and there will always be jobs for the people who provide these things.

If there is enough demand for something, there will be people willing to pay for it and this is what provides jobs. The only secret to continually being employed is to always be providing a service that people want or need. If you do this and nothing more, you will always be employed.

When I was a contractor in Detroit, I knew another contractor who had never gone to college, and he lived in a $1 million house. He never really did much of anything, but he made a great living. He liked to say that his secret was to simply “follow the money”–and this is precisely what he did. One year, for example, the city passed a regulation stating that homeowners needed to do something in particular with their rain gutters. He spent the next year fixing rain gutters. Then cedar shake roofs became fashionable in one neighborhood, so he spent the next few years doing cedar shake roofing. He did small, stupid, odd type jobs, and he was never consistent with the projects he undertook, because they were always changing. This successful man was always giving people what they wanted.

This man never cared about what he wanted; he just cared about what other people wanted. He was always busy and always employed because he was looking for a way to give people what they wanted–not the other way around. You need to give people what they want. It is all about people and what they want.

In my line of work I have encountered numerous people who have gone into the practice of law only to find that there are hardly any jobs out there for them. It is like this with numerous professions. People go and get the right education and attend the right schools, yet they end up jobless and with very few prospects. This is extremely disappointing, but it is a situation that occurs everywhere, and it will always be going on. If lawyers are suddenly not in demand, then it means they are simply not providing a product that the world wants. There is no reason to be angry about this; it is simply the law of supply and demand.

However, in the legal profession, there are always tons of opportunities. There is a need for foreclosure attorneys, people to sue employers for wrongful discharge, and so forth. This demand might not be in your city or backyard, but an attorney should not have to search all that far to find work.

I absolutely hate it when I see businesses and people fail. Even worse is when the people and businesses do not understand why they failed. There is nothing wrong with failing, of course, but failure is something that seems to visit a certain type of business and a certain type of person. Failing is sad; however, failure generally comes down to one very important concept I am about to share with you.

When you drive down any street long enough, you will generally see certain businesses that are thriving and others that are not. The businesses that are thriving are providing something and doing something in a certain way that people (customers) want. Businesses that survive and prosper in all economic climates are those that are able to provide consistent and ongoing value to people and give people what they want.

People, businesses, and others that provide what others want always prosper, and those who do not provide what others want do not prosper. This is how our economic system is set up. This is why there are always going to be firefighter jobs, for example. This is something that people need and want.

Whatever you desire most in life, whether it be respect, a fresh start, a new job, love, money, and more–it can all be yours if you understand the secret of providing a good product. One of the greatest pieces of advice you will ever receive is to give people what they want. Not what you think people want, and not what you feel like, but what they really want. There are very few people out there who truly give people what they want.

Frankly, I am at a loss for words as to why more people do not understand this. The importance of giving people what they want has not changed since the beginning of time. People were using these same secrets in ancient Greece to have incredible careers and lives while walking around in sandals. The same secret is still at work today. If you give people what they want, you will always be employed, and your business will always be successful.

All you need to do is give people what they want.

If we are not providing what people want then we will not have jobs. There may not be the sorts of jobs that everyone wants to do, but they are there. They exist because people require certain things, and there will always be jobs for the people who provide these things. If there is enough demand for something, there will be people willing to pay for it and this is what provides jobs. The only secret to continually being employed is to always be providing a service that people need. If you do this and nothing more you will always be employed. 10 things that successful people won't tell you

There is no secret of the extraordinary success. If one person can, you can reach all people. However, few people do. There is clearly a missing link between the success people crave and the concrete results they get. That missing link can be found in the ten things successful people do not tell you:

# 1-It all started with an idea.
The monumental shifts that took place in the most successful people were not earth shattering moments. The world don't stop. It wasn't an overnight miracle. The birth of extraordinary success is an idea, a passing thought was because a friend said something, he or she read a newspaper article, or a life experience occurred which gave them an idea. Ideas are the product of everyday life and there is nothing special about it except for the fact that this person the vague notion took and ran with it, all, 100%.

Bottomline: go with your gut. When an idea, go with it and not stop until the vision that you do one of two things: 1) leads you to a better idea and larger vision or 2) satisfies itself exactly the way you thought it would.

# 2-Talent is not enough.
There are a lot of brilliant, talented people who never much of their lives. There are a lot of the not-so-talented, relatively boring people who experience extraordinary success on a regular basis. What is the difference? Persistence. Talent is not enough to succeed but persistence. One of the surest ways to fail is constantly feel that you should get another degree, certification or training to succeed. If another person is not necessary to achieve the goal and did, which is proof positive that you have to learn another thing to take action now. It's not about talent; It's about persistence. Talent can always be developed later.

# 3-Success didn't happen overnight.
There is no such thing as an overnight success. You and I know these "success stories" today but we weren't there ten years ago, when they were "in process. Success is acquired over time. The highlight of the dream can happen overnight, but the investment of time, passion and planning occurred over time.

# 4-Achievement is in the details.
Victory is not achieved a boxer in the ring. It is achieved in all trainings, sparring sessions and practice that has occurred from week to week prior to the battle. The same applies to extraordinary success. Your success is guaranteed by the amount of passion, you put sweat and persistence in achieving the goal on a daily basis. Focus, on a daily basis, is the key.

# 5 – they thought about giving up A LOT.
On the journey to extraordinary success, there are times of doubt and uncertainty. In fact, there will be days and weeks that you strongly consider. The only difference between those who succeed and those who don't is that those who succeed decided to see setbacks as temporary; those who do not succeed saw the barriers as insurmountable failures and gave.

# 6-It is not who or what you know; It's what you do with what and who you know.
Connections and knowledge are of little help if you are not willing to take will of the Centre as they present themselves. Many people sit with their odds until they expire. Action is intended to be taken now.

# 7-you'Re never too old to pay dues.
Mastering your craft is a process of lifelong learning. The moment you think you know enough and no longer have to learn is the same time you lose the momentum in order to achieve extraordinary success. You can never be equipped for success. Stay flexible and keep learning. At the same time you don't need to learn and be everything to everyone. The staff of your weaknesses.

# 8-There are key elements for your success that you cannot schedule.
Serendipity (not luck). You have to be ready for the opportunity when it presents itself but you do not intend or foresee when that person in the restaurant, that that letter reached when your potential agent throws it in the garbage can only be picked up by a junior officer. There are parts of this journey that meet beautiful on their own for which you can never plan or trying to make it happen. It is Serendipity. Allowing the process to unfold is key.

# 9 – the Millionaire Mindset not natural; the acquired through practice.
Most of the richest people that you are not starting in life that way. In fact, many of them were poverty stricken far beyond their 20s. For each of them, something happened that shifted from their perspective. They made a choice to change the way they looked at their lives and when they did, the life that they changed looked.

# 10-Money came when they weren't looking.
"People who have money rarely think about anything else." – Dr. Wayne Dyer

"Money is the easiest thing to us."-Louise L. Hay

For truly successful people came money because they were doing what they loved and loved what they did, not because they were aimed at all the money that they would make. If you focus away from making money and making a difference, the money. Relies on the ...

There is no secret to success. Success is a habit that needs to be developed and kept on a daily basis. There is no magic pill here nor there is a special kind of person who gets this. It is available for everyone and the moment you begin to believe in your ability to reach, you will be guided to the steps that are required to have an extraordinary success. However, the key is your action. Nothing less will do.

Understand what motivates people to action

So I wanted to buy a car. It was a tough choice, but I decided that my next new car would be a Volvo. So I drove to a local dealer and told him that I wanted to take a look at a few Volvos and he could help. "Of course," he replied.

After watching drive a couple of cars that I decided to test any of them. As I drove around went the seller about how great this car is and how clients are not complaining about the car and how they love their Volvos. I then asked him to be more specific about what customers like about their Volvo. He seemed to hesitate. It was quickly clear that nobody had ever asked him to be specific. He said: "well, you know, people like the way it drives and how it looks." He rambled on, but never on details.

After a few test drives and more "' oohs and ahs" about how great it would be to own to Volvo I thanked him and departed without buying a car. I wasn't sure and wanted to think about some more.

About a week or so later I decided to go back and some Volvos again test ride. This time I went to another dealer hope to get a different flavor before my thoughts.

The seller that greeted me was a polite and humble individual. We call him Jack. Jack asked me simple questions about what I was looking for in a car. I told him that I had test a few Volvos driven, but not sure whether to buy or not.

Jack listened and nodded his head and said: "alright. Let's start with the model you like the most. " I said: "of course."

We got into the car and I was ready to start the car as Jack asked me to wait a minute. Jack then went on to explain the characteristics of the car. By the time he was finished I understood what each button on the panels, the dashboard and doors could do. Jack explained how many of these features would make my drive more comfortable. It soon became clear that Jack how to sell understood benefits, not features.

When we finally started driving, Jack began to go in the history of the Volvo; origin, model transitions and improvements and on and on. It was like listening to a Volvo documentary ... with me in it!

When we finished stepped Jack me around the car to explain some of the hidden security features. Volvo is known as one of the safest cars in the world. And after Jack's mini-Tour around the vehicle I understood why. Needless to say, within an hour I sat down in his Office finalizing the paperwork to buy my first Volvo.

I gained a few lessons from this experience that I want to share with you.

Firstly, Jack was not a "stain" seller. He was an average guy with a very modest attitude. Most people have in their heads that if a big seller should give you a quick and smooth talker. Wrong. Who would you be more confident? A fast-talking seller just as the first with smooth answers and no depth or someone like Jack that all your questions answered with details and facts?

Secondly, people don't want to be sold, they want to be convinced. Jack understood that gives me a lot of information would go a long way in helping me decide if I wanted to buy or not. I could with Sufficient information, or better yet, convinced me to decide.

I don't buy the first dealer because I don't have enough information to make an informed decision. Everything that I had were the opinions of other people that the car from a seller who I don't personally knew had driven. Testimonials are great, but unless I know the person behind the testimonials means little for me.

More often than not, people reject proposals or making a decision to buy because somewhere in the sales process, their concerns were not addressed. They still have lingering doubts about whether it's the right choice for them.

Jack approach reminded me of a saying that I keep in mind when trying to understand the relationship between motivation and action:

"An ignorant mind is a confused mind. And a confused mind will never make a decision. "

In a hyper-capitalist society where we are inundated and bombard with new technology and features, our mind often times not keeping pace. The task of a seller is to explain the new developments, but more importantly how they benefit of the buyer. Or sell or just trying to convince others, what motivates people in action 1) knowledge and 2) it is in their best interest.

Think about it for a second. If you know ' how to ' do something, you rarely hesitate in getting it done. If you know that it will benefit you personally, you will act!

One final note: If you're in control, like this is very when someone doesn't buy in your approach, a strategy or a way of thinking. Maybe the reason that they are not has less to do with your ideas, and more to do with them not with enough information to make an informed decision OR how it will benefit them in the long run.

PS, Update: five years later my Volvo is still going strong!

Always Ask and Observe: “How Long Have People Been Around”

Loading ... Loading ...  Watch Related Video   |  Read Summary

There is one very easy and almost fail-safe way to evaluate companies, individuals, and various groups of people. It can save you a tremendous amount of worry in business deals and it can also insure that you end up working in places that are likely to be good for you in the long term. In fact, the longer I have studied and implemented this method, the more impressed I have been with the results. It is as follows:

Investigate how long people have stuck with the company, person, or organization. For example, are they surrounded by people they recently met? Or are they surrounded by people they have known for decades? In addition, how are those surrounding people doing in their careers and lives? When you look at companies, how long have they been around? When you look at the people in the companies, how long have they worked for the company? How do they appear to be doing in their careers and lives?

There is nothing more to it. If you do this one thing, you will be able to make excellent decisions in your career and life. You will almost always choose correctly regarding which organizations to join, which people to associate with and more.

Some time ago, I was in business negotiations with someone who was extremely wealthy (to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars), who had what I thought was a very good reputation in business. I was extremely impressed with this individual, but the more I looked at his situation, the less impressed I became. It was not because of anything the person did, or said, it was because of the people around him: With hardly any exceptions, all of the person’s business advisors, employees, and others had been with the person anywhere from a few weeks to less than a year. For someone worth hundreds of millions of dollars, who is considered an incredible business person, this just did not seem right.

While there is nothing wrong with having one or two new employees, when someone is getting on in years and is surrounded by people who have worked for him only for a short time, it is a real warning sign. When you see the same thing with the person’s personal relationships, it is a warning sign as well. If some people are continually finding themselves around new people, they are almost certainly doing something wrong to drive others away. I have seen this time and time again and when you see this, it is cause for immediate concern.

When I was growing up, I had a relative that would have a new best friend (and only friend) every six months to one year. She would make friends with the person and then something would generally happen. There would be some sort of disagreement that would occur and the two sides would part in a bad way. I watched this occur for something like 20+ years. I have seen this with lawyers I know who get this or that new client. The client and attorney at some point get into some sort of disagreement, and the attorney is soon only working with newer clients.

So, the general line of questioning that runs through your head when meeting a new prospective employer or business associate might go something like this:

Where did all the employees go?

Why is this person surrounded all by new and not old friends?

What kind of disagreements have led to this person not inspiring loyalty from the people around them?

Is this person’s reaction to any disagreement simply to fire people?

What is going on here?

What would this mean for my business?

You get the idea.

Some time ago, I had made friends with someone who was around 10 years older than me, who was an exceptional business person and a very intelligent individual. This person had been involved in numerous lawsuits throughout the years, having been sued by one person after another. He had also sued many people. In addition, many of the people close to this person had been party to numerous lawsuits. Much of our conversation often involved me sympathizing (as a friend does) with how this person had been “screwed” by various people and so forth. One day this person called me about some legal issue that was stressful for him and said something I will never forget:

“I am so glad you are here to listen because I do not have any friends or anyone else to talk to about this.” At the time I was taken aback by this statement and became a little uncomfortable. I had not realized that I was this person’s only friend. I was more than happy to listen, although I did feel a little uneasy: I wondered why I was this person’s only friend. It just seemed unusual to me.

A few weeks later, I discovered that this person did something behind my back in business, something brutal and dishonest. I was shocked. What he did made absolutely no sense and seemed completely unnecessary. However, looking back on this I should have realized that the person could not be trusted. I should have realized there was a reason that people avoided this person. I should have realized that there was a reason that this person was involved in so many lawsuits. I should have easily seen these warning signs.

Say what you want about him, but many of the people who work for Donald Trump have worked for him for decades. If people are loyal to Trump for that long, the chances are very good that he is doing something right. It is like this with any person and any business:

If you know people who have had the same friends and acquaintances for decades, the chances are these people are doing something right. If you have had the same friends and acquaintances for decades, the chances are you are doing something right. If you are working in a business where people have worked there for 10, 20, or 30 years, the chances are the business is doing something right. If you are considering being friends with someone who is surrounded by people they have been friends with for years, the chances are that person is doing something right.

There are numerous businesses out there which are simply “flash in the pan”. For a spell they may look like the next great thing. When these businesses pop up out of nowhere, they often attract many employees to them, including employees from older and more established companies. They may look good to potential employees because there is less supervision; the company pays more money, or something similar. However, the odds are often very slim that a company such as this will end up being around for long. Most companies fail pretty quickly and almost all of them are gone within five years. It is the established companies that are able to keep people employed for long periods of time, and which retain employees over the long term–these are who should inspire real interest.

An established company has had to make countless adjustments over the years to remain competitive and to hold on to its people. When you are evaluating employers, this is something far more useful than simply judging whether the employer looks attractive at the moment. Long term results are much more important than what looks good in the present.
