Success And Happiness – Just Learn How To Pay Attention

I have been issuing a Free Personal Development Ezine for the past few years – twice a week, articles and short videos – and from the comments that I get I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s lots of guys and girls out there who give out about life, but who won’t take the appropriate action to change. A majority of people are unhappy in their work but are prepared to grin and bear it. The normal mind is numbed by the routine of daily life. Plenty of people are in unsatisfactory relationships. People are unhappy with who they think they are – their shape, weight, lack of assertiveness, low self-esteem, eating habits, fitness… But what all these people – and there’s a whopping great chance that this includes you – don’t understand is that everything would alter effortlessly if they simply sat up straight and started to pay attention.

Yeah, you heard me – just like what the teacher told you in nursery school! Psychological studies suggest that your happiness and success is directly linked to your ability to pay attention. That may seem a little bizarre – but think about it. Successful people are more focused – and focus is just a fancy word for paying attention. Presence is one of the main hallmarks of success – successful people have presence – and that just means that they focus to an abnormal extent on the here and now. Or, more to the point, successful people bother to turn up for their own lives! They are abnormally attentive to the here and now – they give it their complete attention.

Contrast this with your average Joe who, research concludes, is missing in action! The normal mind is, to use an Irish expression, ‘not all there’ – we’re all over the place. The normal mind is focused on your ‘stored knowledge’ – what you learned during your formative years. Your normal mind is immune to what’s actually happening now and that’s why ordinary people are stuck on the daily sorry-go-round!

You’ve got to pay attention, focus, get your head in the game. And, in real reality, it’s no big deal if you’re not sure what you want out in your life (how many of us are?!) – what’s of primary importance is that you pay attention to what’s taking place right now – you just don’t know what opportunities you might spot (which you caannot spot if you’re not all there!). Paying attention is about the here and now. Focus is about doing what you’re actually doing without dwelling on your self-defeating beliefs (from ‘I don’t like my job’ to ‘I don’t like me’). Focus is about being present, having presence and getting into the flow of life.

Has it now dawned on you that all the fantastic things that have ever happened in your life (yeah, even if you’re a desperate case, some good stuff happened somewhere along the way) happened in a spontaneous manner? You can rediscover life’s spontaneity, all you’ve got to do is turn up to your own life – right here, right now – pay attention to what’s actually happening, not what your bizarre, ordinary mind would convince you is going on.

Where all successful people have started and what you can learn from the

You have the desire to succeed in life? If you are reading this, then the answer is probably yes. Because you want to be successful, I am sure you have asked yourself how other successful people was that way. And, if you're like most people, you probably have analyzed to the point where you no longer remember why you analyze them more.

Of course, it's great to learn from other people who have become successful because they have the wisdom, experience and knowledge that you need to become successful as well. The great thing about looking back at these successful people is to know that when they started, they were just like you.

I think Ralph Waldo Emerson did an excellent job explaining this when he said, "every artist was first an amateur. You see, you must start somewhere, just like any other successful person. They were all amateurs at some point in their lives. The reason is that they were successful because she gained the experience and expertise of a professional.

Two things contribute to your relocation of an amateur, or a lesser place than where you want to be, to be successful. The first is consistency, and the second is time. Amateurs work consistently on their skill and then over time it develops to a point where people start to see the experience and the perfection of their skill.

If you are successful, no matter what it is or where you want to be alive, remain consistent and keep with it. These two keys will help you to go from an amateur to ever someone that is well respected in your area.

Learn to Confront Silence

Loading ... Loading ...A persistent fight that many couples have is that one may like to get out and do all sorts of things (meet people, dine out, and so forth) and the other may enjoy just sitting at home doing nothing. I read an interesting article some time ago about the breakup of Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields that discussed this. As I have heard of various breakups of other couples throughout the years, this same rationale for separating has emerged more times than I can count: One always wanted to be on the go and the other did not.

What this conflict is truly about, on a more fundamental level, is that one person feels the need to stay active and the other wants to be inactive. One person craves distraction and movement, and the other person craves silence and stillness. I believe that most of us struggle with silence and stillness, and how we deal with this defines our lives. Very few people (myself included) have come to terms with silence. The problem with silence is that it forces us to confront ourselves and who we really are. The less active we are, the more we need to confront what is going on in our minds, and confronting the inner workings of our minds is difficult for many people.

It is interesting to study religion, yoga, and other cultural movements that have emerged in various parts of the world throughout the millennia. Most of these movements have various forms of meditation built into them.  Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and many other religions include meditation and silence in their rituals.  In fact, one could argue that a major component of each of these religions is an attempt to quieten our minds and put us in touch with this silence. Whether it is through chanting, repetitive prayers, or some other means, each of these religions seek to get us in touch with silence. Think about the monks who sit and chant hours per day, for example. This action puts them in touch with the silence of their own minds.

In most forms of traditional yoga (not necessarily that which is practiced in the United States), people spend about an hour or so stretching and doing various poses before meditating. Very few people realize that the stretching and yoga poses done prior to meditation are only done in order to make the meditation itself more effective: The theory is that in order to calm the mind and access silence within, you need to calm the body.  It was believed that only by calming the body could you access the silence of the mind. Practitioners of traditional yoga do not want the body to distract them from sitting in silence for a long period. Instead, they want to access the silence within their minds, and they view the body as something that potentially can get in the way of that silence.

Paradoxically, in the United States and in other areas of the world, yoga has become more about stretching and exercise and less about quieting the mind and accessing this silence.  If you think about this, it is somewhat fascinating because yoga, as it was developed throughout the centuries, was only conceived to be about the mind and not the body.  Most of the yoga classes I have been to in the United States, however, have involved very little chanting or meditation. I believe this is more a symbol of our world than anything else: People have become more interested in movement than in silence.

Like modern yoga in the United States, the vast majority of us are more concerned with distracting ourselves than silence. In my household, for example, the television is on most of the time. I would much rather sit in front of a television than sit in silence.  A television is comforting, and it keeps my mind occupied.  On the weekends, I would much rather be running around going out to lunch, the grocery store, or playing with my children at a park than sitting around in silence.  In a similar manner, it is rare that my family does something as simple as sit on a porch and look outside during a summer day.  We are more likely to be moving around and doing something than nothing at all.

People are continually distracting themselves in many, many ways, and it can cause serious problems in their lives. Most of the problems that we experience, I believe, are due to the dangers of distraction.  We distract ourselves with:

FoodBusinessTelevisionMovementGamblingFast carsShoppingMoving to new placesSex and promiscuityMoneyHaving new experiencesExerciseFighting with other peopleSocializing with other  peopleDrugs and alcoholCigarettesCrime

In fact, the list of distractions we have is massive, and the more you look around at people you know, the more distractions you are likely to see.  I certainly engage in many distractions and so do you. For example, if I am sitting around doing nothing on a weekend, I will have a snack—not because I am hungry but because I am bored.  I may have several snacks just to keep my mind occupied. This certainly is not good for my health; this sort of snacking does me no good whatsoever. I am no different than virtually anyone I know, though. Most people, particularly in this country, find themselves distracting themselves in one way or another when confronted by silence.

When we stop working, stop moving, and stop distracting ourselves, we are confronting this silence.  Silence can cause much discomfort for people, and it is in this silence that many people experience problems in their day-to-day lives.

Silence can come when you are at home at night.Silence can come when you are on vacation and trying to relax.Silence can come on the weekend when you are not at work.

In fact, silence can be found almost anywhere, and it is something that you need to learn to live with and learn from. There is strength in being able to confront silence, and it is a challenge we should consider undertaking.

Most of the very successful people have difficulty confronting this silence.  People who work seven days a week may find themselves unable to handle the silence.  When you look at most “super achievers” out there, they are working as hard as they are because without the work, they would need to confront this sort of silence.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to interview and speak with hundreds of extremely successful people.  As a student of achievement, I have always been interested in the history of these people.  Generally, there are things in their past that they are simply not comfortable dealing with. There are aspects of their past that, when there is silence, they find themselves needing to confront. It could be a poor relationship with a parent, a major failure from their past, or something else that is hurtful. In just about every case I have seen, though, the super achiever has issues he or she needs to solve.

This came out for me a few days ago, when I was learning in more detail about a person I know.  This person has been an internationally famous producer, has virtually perfect health, has a great marriage, and is wealthy beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.  In fact, if you were to look at this person’s life from the outside, you would think that it was the best life imaginable.

Despite all of these achievements and outward happiness, this person is incredibly upset with their life because one of their siblings receives all the praise and love from their parents—despite being a failure. The parents always have sided with the less successful sibling and never praised the more successful one. The more successful one drinks too much, cycles through various antidepressants (which do not work), seeks out affairs, spends tons of money on things they should not, and more. The person is distracting themself from the world because the pain they feel related to their parents is just too severe.

It is in silence and without distraction that we confront our true selves and the consciousness that lies behind who we are.  There are tons of studies that link profound psychological benefits to meditation, yoga, prayer, silence, and other disciplines that put us in touch with this silence. Confronting silence is often called “confronting our own demons.” If you look at your life, you are likely to discover that you spend a great deal of your time running, moving, and engaging in all sorts of activities that are not necessarily contributing to your happiness. You are lost in distraction.  Yet it is through facing the silence — and with it, reality — that your world will begin to change for the better.

How to use psychotactics to retain 90% of everything you learn

Imagine if you had a bucket of water. And every time you attempted to fill the bucket, 90% of the water would leak out instantly. Every time, all you’d retain was a measly 10%. How many times would you keep filling the bucket?

The answer is simple: just once.

The first time you noticed the leak, you’d take action

You’d either fix the bucket or you’d get another bucket, wouldn’t you?

Yet that’s not at all the way we learn.

Almost all of us waste 90% of our time, resources and learning time, because we don’t understand a simple concept called the Learning Pyramid. The Learning Pyramid was developed way back in the 1960s by the NTL Institute in Bethel, Maine. And if you look at the pyramid you’ll see something really weird.

That weird thing is that you’re wasting time. You’re wasting resources. You’re just doing everything you can to prevent learning. And here’s why.

To summarize the numbers (which sometimes get cited differently) learners retain approximately:

90% of what they learn when they teach someone else/use immediately.
75% of what they learn when they practice what they learned.
50% of what they learn when engaged in a group discussion.
30% of what they learn when they see a demonstration.
20% of what they learn from audio-visual.
10% of what they learn when they’ve learned from reading.
5% of what they learn when they’ve learned from lecture.

So why do you retain 90% when you teach someone else or when you implement it immediately?

There’s a good reason why. When you implement or teach, you instantly make mistakes. Try it for yourself. (In this article for instance, after I’d read the information, I cited the loss rate as 95% instead of 90% to begin with. I had to go back and correct myself. Then I found three more errors, which I had to fix. These were factual errors that required copy and paste, but I still made the errors).

So as soon as you run into difficulty and start to make mistakes, you have to learn how to correct the mistake. This forces your brain to concentrate.

But surely your brain is concentrating in a lecture or while reading

Sure it is, but it’s not making any mistakes. What your brain hears or sees is simply an abstract concept. And no matter how clearly the steps are outlined, there is no way you’re going to retain the information. There are two reasons why.

Reason 1: Your brain gets stuck at the first obstacle.
Reason 2: Your brain needs to make the mistake first hand.

Reason 1: Your brain gets stuck at the first obstacle.

Yes it does. And the only way to understand this concept is to pick up a book, watch a video, or listen to audio. Any book, any video, any audio. And you’ll find you’ve missed out at least two or three concepts in just the first few minutes. It’s hard to believe at first, but as you keep reading the same chapter over and over, you’ll find you’re finding more and more that you’ve missed.

This is because the brain gets stuck at the first new concept/obstacle. It stops and tries to apply the concept but struggles to do so. But you continue to read the book, watch the video or listen to the speaker. The brain got stuck at the first point, but more points keep coming. And of course, without complete information, you have ‘incomplete information’.

Incomplete information can easily be fixed by making the mistake first hand.

Reason 2: Your brain needs to make the mistake first hand

No matter how good the explanation, you will not get it right the first time. You must make the mistake. And this is because your interpretation varies from the writer/speaker. You think you’ve heard or read what you’ve heard/read. But the reality is different. You’ve only interpreted what they’ve said, and more often than not, the interpretation is not quite correct. You can only find out how much off the mark you are by trying to implement or teach the concept.

So how do you avoid losing 90% of what you’ve learned?

Well, do what I do. I learn something. I write it down in a mindmap. I talk to my wife or clients about the concept. I write an article about it. I do an audio. And so it goes. A simple concept is never just learned. It needs to be discussed, talked, written, felt etc. (I wrote this article, ten minutes after reading these statistics online).

The next time you pick up a book or watch a video, remember this .

Listening or reading something is just listening or reading.
It’s not real learning.
Real learning comes from making mistakes.
And mistakes come from implementation.
And that’s how you retain 90% of everything you learn.

Which is why most of the people you meet are always going around in circles.

They refuse to make mistakes. So they don’t learn.
They’d rather read a book instead. Or watch a video. Or listen to an audio.

Their bucket is leaking 90% of the time.

But they don’t care.
The question is: Do you?
